My current laptop doesn't have an optical drive (a common situation with the latest laptops). I needed an external drive for installing some older software and eventually decided on this ROOFULL external CD/DVD drive. Drive: I've used the drive multiple times now, for reading/installing program CDs on a laptop. It was immediately recognized by both a 6 year old and 1 year old laptop (both running Win 10). The disk tray ejects and closes as one would expect. While reading a disk it was quiet and efficient. I tested both connection types (USB 3.0, Type-C) and both performed well. The 2-in-1 cable tucks snugly into the underside of the drive, which is a clever way to prevent losing the cable - a problem I've had with external drives in the past. It is light enough to toss in a bag and go. I can not speak to it's disk burning features, as I haven't used it for this purpose. My only improvement suggestion would be to make the 2-in-1 cable longer. It currently is about 10 inches long, but having an additional 6 inches would've put it within easy reach when it's plugged into the back my laptop. For this inconvenience, I deducted 1 star from the "Easy to Use" rating. Storage Case: The included gray carrying case is of much better quality than I expected. It's well-padded interior makes me confident that it will provide great protection for short drops or bumping around in a travel bag/backpack. The exterior zippered pocket proved handy for storing an additional cable and thumb drive. Bottom Line: I found the drive to be extremely easy to use...definitely "plug n play" for my application. It appears to be solidly constructed. It performed consistently well through-out my usage. The value is definitely there for me, with the $23.99 price (Oct 2020) making it a "no-brainer" purchase. A great solution if you need to access disks on a laptop with no internal optical drive. Read more

I bought this ROOFULL external CD/DVD drive because my laptop doesn’t come with a built-in DVD player anymore (like most modern laptops), and I’m really happy with it. It was truly plug-and-play—just connected it via USB, and it worked right away without needing any extra drivers. I've used it to play DVDs and install some older software from discs, and everything ran smoothly. The build quality feels solid, and the performance has been reliable so far. It’s compact, easy to carry, and does exactly what I need. If you’re looking for a no-fuss external DVD drive, this one gets the job done. ✅ Pros: Works right out of the box Solid build, quiet operation Great for laptops without DVD drives ❌ Cons: None so far Read more

I purchased this CD/DVD drive to replace an Apple drive. Actually, to replace two Apple drives. The first Apple drive just stopped working after a number of months. A CD disc is stuck in the second drive. The Apple drive costs more than twice as much as the Roofull. I also specifically wanted an external drive with an ejecting disc tray and a forced ejection hole. I like that the drive reads just about all cd formats. I use the drive primarily to upload edited songs to my computer and to burn songs to blank cds. The drive reads and uploads very quickly. The quality of the sound of the uploaded songs and the quality on the burned cds is excellent. Although I don't usually watch dads on my computer, I tried playing a dvd. When I loaded the dvd in the drive a menu box opened on my iMac computer. I had to select the number of my geographical location in the world which I picked from the displayed map which took a couple of seconds and then the dvd started right away and ran beautifully. Although I didn't have to use it, one can obtain technical support if one has trouble getting the drive connected to and working with their computer. I was worried that the USB cord might not be long enough for me to position the drive in a location that would permit easy, convenient usage, but that was not a problem at all. Other details that I like....the cord fits in to the bottom of the drive; so when not in use or when carrying, there is no dangling cord or plugs. There is also a nice soft, slightly padded carrying case with an external zippered pocket that could store a dust cloth etc. So far, I am very happy with my purchase! Read more

I recently purchased this drive because my laptop does not have a drive in it. I now have to use peripherals. This drive is nice because it's portable, lightweight, and most importanly, gives you two options for plugging in -- both USB A and C, and the C is universal. I had no problems plugging this directly into my Mac and the device showing up on the Mac. I was able to use it immediately to upload CDs and it worked like a charm (I used different audio conversion software than the one the product came with). It isn't the fastest upload, but it uploads quick enough, hence my rating of four stars. If it were REALLY fast then it would get 5 stars. Everything else seems to work perfectly and it's an great, portable device, especially for those of us on the go. I don't regret this purchase at all and would recommend it for those that are seeking a very affordable, portable CD/DVD drive. Read more

It's well-padded interior makes me confident that it will provide great protection for short drops or bumping around in a travel bag/backpack. The exterior zippered pocket proved handy for storing an additional cable and thumb drive. Bottom Line: I found the drive to be extremely easy to use...definitely \"plug n play\" for my application. It appears to be solidly constructed. It performed consistently well through-out my usage. The value is definitely there for me, with the $23.99 price (Oct 2020) making it a \"no-brainer\" purchase. A great solution if you need to access disks on a laptop with no internal optical drive. Read more",

"body": "I bought this ROOFULL external CD/DVD drive because my laptop doesn’t come with a built-in DVD player anymore (like most modern laptops), and I’m really happy with it. ✅ Pros: Works right out of the box Solid build, quiet operation Great for laptops without DVD drives ❌ Cons: None so far Read more",

"title": "5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent device for the price!",
"body": "I purchased this CD/DVD drive to replace an Apple drive. Read more",

"title": "4.0 out of 5 stars This Portable CD/DVD Drive works well and does the job, and is Type-C Universal",
"body": "I recently purchased this drive because my laptop does not have a drive in it. Read more",

"meta": "Amazon.com: ROOFULL External CD/DVD Drive with Carrying Case for Laptop, USB 3.0 Type-C CD Burner Reader Writer DVD Player ROM/RW USB-C Portable Optical Disk Drive for Mac PC Windows 11/10 MacBook Linux Computer : Electronics",
"product": "Product description Bring Your CDs and DVDs Back to Life – Easy Playback, Burning, and Archiving with ROOFULL ECD829-Y DVD Drive In the pursuit of ultra-thin and lightweight designs, most laptop computer manufacturers have removed built-in CD/DVD drives. However, whether it's using educational discs for school, enjoying music CDs and movie DVDs from the 90s, or simply backing up important data, optical discs still play an important role in our daily lives. Fortunately, you can easily get an external CD/DVD drive at a very affordable price to handle all of these tasks. And if you’re looking for something more solid, durable, and long-lasting, the full-featured ROOFULL ECD829-Y DVD drive burner with protective carrying case is worth considering. The ROOFULL ECD829-Y is far more than a basic CD/DVD-ROM reader. It’s a versatile device that functions as a burner, writer, rewriter, ripper, and recorder—all in one. You can use it to enjoy commercial music CDs and movie DVDs, burn your favourite audio to blank CDs, digitize your old music CDs and video DVDs into MP3, WMA, or MP4 files, view photo CDs, create custom playlists, install software or games from discs, and protect your data with physical backups . It supports a wide range of disc formats, including CD-R/RW, DVD±R/RW, DVD-RAM, VCD, and SVCD, making it an essential tool for your multimedia needs. No one wants to waste time on a complicated setup, so the ECD829-Y has been designed for easy installation. Simply connect the built-in data cable (neatly stored underneath the device) to your computer, and it will automatically install and be recognized by your PC (On macOS, the disc icon won't appear on the desktop until a disc is inserted and successfully read.), then you can insert your disc and enjoy smooth reading, burning, and ripping with your preferred media player or burning software. Tips: Due to macOS restrictions, the eject button may not work after playing or burning a disc. To eject the disc, right-click the icon and select \"Eject\", or go to File > Eject from the top menu. Note: If your computer doesn’t have suitable software installed, you may need to download one. Scroll down to see detailed steps and recommended programs (also included in the attached user manual). Note: This drive only works with Windows, Linux, and Apple Mac computers. It is not compatible with Chromebooks, TVs, cars, trucks, projectors, tablets, iPads, phones, PS4/5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and does not support Blu-ray discs. Enhanced USB 3.0, Supported Disc Type, and Max Read/Write Speed Upgraded USB 3.0 not only supports high-speed transfers up to 5 Gbps — 10 times faster than USB 2.0 — with DVD 8X and CD 24X max read/write, but also offers smooth, stable, and reliable operation with enhanced error correction and noise reduction for long-lasting use. Supported Disc Types: Support the reading , burning (writing/rewriting), and ripping (digitizing) of multiple types of discs, including CD-ROM, CD-R, CD±RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±R DL, VCD, SVCD. ( Blu-ray, 4K, and some M-discs are NOT supported ) Max Read/Write Speeds: CD-ROM 24x, CD-R 24x, CD±RW 8x, DVD-ROM 8x, DVD±R 8x, DVD±RW 8x, DVD±R DL 4x. ( Tips: The drive gradually increases speed from the inner to the outer edge, with a slower startup speed that reaches maximum performance as it progresses.) Safe Burning & Ripping Speed: While the maximum read/write speeds for CDs are 24X and 8X for DVDs, we recommend burning or ripping at 10X or lower for CDs , and 4X to 8X for DVDs . Slower speeds, such as 4X or 8X, are ideal for ensuring data integrity, especially with high-capacity or dual-layer discs. These speeds enable more precise data encoding, reducing the risk of read errors. USB 3.0 & USB-C Data Cable The data cable embedded under the CD drive has USB 3.0 & USB-C two kinds of connectors on the end, making it easier to connect different laptop or desktop computers without an adapter required and no worries about losing the data cable. * Due to the limitation of the design, the data cable length is only about 25 cm/ 9.8 inches. Plug and Play No extra driver program is required, just plug the data cable directly into your computer's USB-A or USB-C port, it will automatically install and be recognized by your computer, then you can use this CD drive to read or write your CD or DVD discs through the corresponding software. Powerful Performance As a professional manufacturer with 10 years of experience dedicated to producing reliable-quality external CD/DVD drives. Each ROOFULL USB CD/DVD drive is equipped with a 100% loader with high speed, strong error correction, anti-shock, noise reduction, and low power consumption, bringing you a faster and smoother experience. * Please keep your CD/DVD drive flat and ensure that your disc is securely fixed on the tray. Better Protection Portable slim external CD/DVD drive with thicker protective carrying case, allows us to carry and use this portable external CD/DVD drive anytime, anywhere no matter you are at home, in the office, or during a trip, no worry about bumps, scratches, drops, and dents accidentally. * Approximate size: 14.6*14.9*1.7 cm ( 5.74* 5.86* 0.67 inch) Compatibility, Incompatibility, Recommended Software, and Usage Instructions Compatibility: This USB external CD/DVD player for PC is compatible with Windows laptops and desktops (11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP), Linux computers, and Apple devices, including MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio (including M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips). Incompatibility: This drive is not compatible with Chrome OS (Chromebooks), TVs, cars, trucks, projectors, tablets, iPads, smartphones, gaming consoles (PS4/PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch), and it cannot play Blu-ray discs . How to Use on Windows Computers: Prepare playback, burning, or ripping software based on your needs, and network connection for Windows 11 > Connect the data cable (located under the drive) to your computer's USB-A or USB-C port directly, or through a self-powered USB hub > The system will automatically install the necessary driver, and a “ DVD RW ” icon will appear in Windows Explorer > For video DVDs, make sure to set the DVD region code to match your disc (e.g., Region 1 for US/Canada); CDs do not require a region setting > Insert the CD or DVD, then use your chosen software to play, burn, or rip > When finished, eject the disc by pressing the physical button or right-clicking the icon and selecting “Eject.” Trusted Free Software for Windows: For audio CD playback, use Windows Media Player or VLC; for video DVD playback, try VLC, Kodi, or 5KPlayer; to burn audio CDs, use CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn; for burning video DVDs, use ImgBurn, BurnAware Free, or CDBurnerXP; to rip audio CDs, consider Windows Media Player, iTunes, Exact Audio Copy (EAC), or Fre:ac; to rip video DVDs, use HandBrake or MakeMKV. How to Set the Region Code in Windows: Right-click the \"DVD-RW Drive\" icon and select \"Properties\" > Go to the \"Hardware\" tab and select your CD/DVD drive > Click \"Properties\" at the bottom > Open the \"DVD Region\" tab > Choose the correct region (e.g. Region 1 for US/Canada) and click \"OK\". (Note: You can only change the region code 4~5 times.) How to Use it on Apple Mac Computers : Open Finder > Settings (or Preferences , depending on your macOS version) > Ensure \" CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices \" is checked in the General Tab and Sidebar Tab if available > Prepare the media player, burning, or ripping software based on your needs (not all) > Plug the data cable ( located under the drive ) into your computer's USB-A or USB-C port directly or a self-powered USB hub > Insert your CDs or DVDs > The disc drive icon will appear on the desktop after a disc is successfully read > Use your installed software to play, burn, or rip the disc > After playback/burning, the tray cannot open via the button due to macOS limitations. To eject a disc on Mac computers after playback/burning, right-click on the desktop icon and select \"eject,\" or choose \"File\" > \"Eject\" from the menu. Trusted Free Software for Apple Mac: For audio CDs, use Apple Music, iTunes, or VLC; for video DVD playback, use VLC or Apple DVD Player; for burning audio CDs, try Apple Music, Burn, or Express Burn; to burn video DVDs, use Burn for Mac, HandBrake, DVDStyler, or iDVD (for older systems); to rip audio CDs, use Apple Music, X Lossless Decoder (XLD), or HandBrake; to rip video DVDs, use MakeMKV or HandBrake with VLC (to read protected DVDs). What's the Burning & Ripping: “Burning” means copying music, videos, or files from your computer onto a blank CD or DVD, while “ripping” means copying content from a CD or DVD onto your computer. These processes let you create custom discs or save physical media digitally. Note Before Burning Discs: Before burning, ensure your blank disc capacity is sufficient (CD-R/CD-RW: 700MB or 80 min audio; DVD-R/DVD+R: 4.7GB or 2 hours video; Dual Layer DVD: 8.5GB for long videos), use the proper burning software , set a safe burning speed (10X or lower for CDs and 4X to 8X for DVDs), and confirm the file format is compatible with the blank disc (Supported audio formats: WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC [M4A]. For car or home CD players, burn in CD-DA format; Use MPEG-2, VOB, or MPG for DVD-Video.). To convert files into disc-compatible formats, use Burn (for Mac), DVDStyler (for Windows & Mac), or CDBurnerXP (for Windows). If burning a data disc for storage, you can include any standard file types without format conversion. About Photo/Image Discs: Some photos cannot be viewed or downloaded on Mac and Windows due to incompatible disc formats, unsupported image files, copy protection, or disc damage. Both systems support JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, HEIF, and most RAW formats, but some RAW files may need Preview, Photos, or third-party software to open.
